John Ward's 'Melissa Plus'

  • Description:
John had the great idea to double the output tubes (four 6V6GTs), and run 2 X 12" Celestion Blues in a combo style Melissa. He's called it the 'Melissa Plus,' and it's an incredible amp for range of styles, etc.

Recording was done by John and Patrick while I plucked the strings. They recorded 2 channels. The SM57 was tight on the cone and went directly into a Teac 424 tapedeck used for mixing (didn't record to tape). The room mic was Pat's AT4033a set back about 15' and 8' up, he ran it through an ART tube preamp and into the Teac 424. From the Teac, they ran it through a Edirol UA-1ex USB interface that did the A/D conversion into a Mac laptop. Recorded at 44 kHz on the Mac using Audacity software. No real or software effects were used, only the gain was adjusted in Audacity. Files were saved as MP3s.

Check-out the clips. The range of tube tones this amp does exceptionally well is, well, unparalled. The 'Ovation' clip should not be missed.
